Can Power Yoga Negatively Affect Conception and Pregnancy?

There are some recent studies that show gentle yoga may even help with conception by relaxing your body and mind, you may increase your odds of getting pregnant. However, power yoga can negatively affect your chance of conception, so if you are hitting the yoga studio three times a week, you need to find another form of exercise during conception and pregnancy.

A woman's inner core temperature plays a large role in conception and pregnancy. Women who are trying to conceive or are pregnant need to make sure that their temperature doesn't go over 101 degrees Fahrenheit. If you're doing power yoga, the excessive heat and activity can actually cause your body to go into protection mode, which means your periods will be irregular or you won't ovulate at all.

In power yoga, the workout is more intense, and the room is heated to a high temperature to increase flexibility and promote sweating. There is evidence that suggests that high levels of exercise like power yoga can hinder conception because of the endorphins released during the workout. Higher levels of prolactin often called the pregnancy hormone can be released, which interferes with fertility. When women are breastfeeding, they release high levels of prolactin and are usually unable to get pregnant.

If you're already pregnant, you need to pay special attention to your core temperature. A high core temperature can lead to premature labor or miscarriage. The baby's heart rate also increases as the mother's does, so if you're having a heart-pounding power yoga session, you could be putting your baby at risk. Low intensity, gentle exercise three times a week is recommended by physicians, and you should aim for 30 minutes each time.

Many women begin fitness programs when they are trying to conceive, but can yoga especially help you get pregnant? A recent Harvard study says yes. A researcher at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Alice Domar, performed a study that took women who had been trying to become pregnant for at least a year, and had them take a 10-week exercise program that included yoga and meditation. The results showed that 55 percent of the women in the group became pregnant within the following year.

Doctors aren't sure exactly why yoga so greatly impacts fertility. Some physicians say that strenuous, high impact exercise may actually damage a woman's chance for conceiving, and since yoga is a gentle form of exercise, fertility is never damaged.

Yoga also improves your overall health, including the muscles that surround and support reproductive organs. Circulation is improved, breathing is regulated, and the body becomes calmer. Stress can also hinder conception, and women who are having difficulty conceiving may feel more anxious as they continue to be unsuccessful at getting pregnant. Yoga allows you to relax and can help flush out toxins in your body, making for a meditative state.

A lot of couples do yoga together, as it can strengthen relationships and improve bonding. Also, some couples become agitated as they fail to conceive, and time spent together can become more about getting pregnant than enjoying one another's company.
