Natural Labor Methods: Bradley Method
The Bradley Method of child birth was developed by Obstetrician Robert Bradley in the late 1965. The Bradley Method of child birth came from Dr Robert Bradleys belief that birth is a natural process, that women could handle without drugs or interventions and birth could be natural.
Dr. Bradley founded the American Academy of Husband Coached Childbirth that now offers the Bradley Method of childbirth. The duration of the Bradley Childbirth Method program is 12 weeks, making it longer and more intensive than most other childbirth education programs. It is a comprehensive program that includes instruction on pregnancy, birth, and postpartum issues. One of the other primary goals of the Bradley Childbirth Method program is to educate partners to be supportive and effective labor coaches.
Classes are usually limited to eight couples in order to provide a more intimate, interactive learning experience. The topics covered include prenatal nutrition and its impact on a healthy pregnancy, exercise during pregnancy, pregnancy symptoms and complaints and how to cope with them, and relaxation techniques during labor and birth. Breathing methods are emphasized as a coping mechanism to deal with the intense pain of labor. Mothers are taught to “tune in” and manage pain, instead of distracting themselves from it as other methods teach. The Bradley Childbirth Method class also instructs partners in effective labor coaching. Couples also learn about the different stages of labor and how to cope with the transitions between them. The belief is that certain medical interventions, such as the administration of Pitocin and pain medications such as an epidural, may slow labor, and increase the chances of a c-section. Postnatal care and breastfeeding are other important topics covered in the Bradley Childbirth Method.

Your birth plan should include your preferred childbirth method. Just as every woman is individual, so will her labor be. Some women want a home birth in a birthing pool while others prefer the security of a hospital setting. Research all the methods available to you in order to make the right choice. Start with the articles presented below. They detail the different methods available to you and armed with this knowledge, you can make the right decision for you and your partner. Often nature will take over and your plan will have to be altered for the health of your baby or yourself and getting frustrated that this doesn't correspond with your plan is counterproductive. As out of control as you may feel sometimes, your labor is an extremely personal experience and one that will change you forever. Whichever you chose, you need to stay flexible.
Lamaze is a childbirth preparation method where relaxation, breathing techniques and informed decisions are paramount.
The Lamaze Technique is a natural childbirth technique developed in the 1940s by French obstetrician Dr. Ferdinand Lamaze as an alternative to the use of general anesthesia during labor. Dr. Lamaze was influenced by childbirth practices, which involved breathing and relaxation techniques under the supervision of a midwife. The Lamaze mission is to promote normal, natural, healthy and fulfilling childbearing experiences for women and their families through education, advocacy and reform.
Modern Lamaze childbirth classes teach expectant mothers breathing techniques and often other ways to work with the labor process to reduce the pain often associated with childbirth, such as hot and cold packs, changing positions, the use of a "birthing ball" to remain in a supposedly more natural upright position.
